Job Turn Downs and Regrets

While there are legitimate reasons to turn down a job offer, sometimes the reasons we think are important at the time really seem quite trivial when we think back on them. Listed below are just some of these reasons candidates have shared with us about why they turned down job offers. If you have any to add to the list from your experience, please share them with us.

  1. This position does not have enough travel. I really do not want to spend that much time at home with my wife and three kids.
  2. I have only been looking for 2 weeks. The offer came too soon and I am scared.
  3. I am having problems conceiving and the new healthcare plan won't cover fertility treatments.
  4. While I was on vacation in Italy, my boyfriend proposed on a gondola. I am moving to Virginia to be closer to him.
  5. Management has assured me that I will still be receiving my very substantial bonus, and the fact that I had to eliminate most of my staff my first month on the job should not sway me to believe that my position may be in jeopardy.
  6. The offer letter came from Human Resources, not the hiring manager.
  7. The health plan will not cover the dependent of a dependent, and my daughter is pregnant.
  8. The overtime required would infringe on my ability to make and distribute records for female barbershop quartets.
