Now What ???    A Primer on Onboarding

  • You have accepted your new role.
  • The start date is exactly two weeks from today
  • You are excited and ready to go.

So ….Now What???...

Before You Start
The goal is to let your team and your staff know who you are, your way of operating and that you’re there to help them. As concerned as you may be about meeting them, they are equally or more concerned about meeting and pleasing you.

  • Email your new manager and direct reports to let them know how excited you are about your new role and how anxious you are to jump right in.
  • Ask to go in early and set up your new office. Use this opportunity to meet people and familiarize yourself with the campus.
  • Find out about the resources available to you.
  • Ask to have your email set up early so you can really hit the ground running, receive background information, and communicate with your team.

Onboarding

  • Ask for a list of  the key people you will likely meet your first week, with titles, so you are familiar with them. Google or A9 the key people you will meet so you know more about their background.
  • Put in place and implement a 100 day plan that outlines five critical tasks you want to accomplish (NOT necessarily things you may want to change- THAT comes later!). Within the first 100 days you need to complete all remaining onboarding conversations and put in place the building blocks that will assure you have the needed tactical capacity.

Imbue the Culture

  • Ask whom you can go to during the first six months, to answer the “inside the ropes” questions.
  • Try to meet people throughout the organization; ask to be introduced to the functional departments throughout the company.
  • Set your strategy and establish your priorities.
  • Establish key relationships.
  • Enjoy your success.
